The Foundation

The Lions Medical Research Foundation is a non profit organization funding medical research. In 1963 the Foundation was first discussed at a Lions Convention.

The Foundation was formed, and in 1966, Dr John Healy became the Foundation's first recipient of seed funding for his research into kidney transplantation. Other notable recipients are Professor Ian Frazer who received early funding for his now world famous research into cervical cancer, Professor Lawrie Hirst's groundbreaking Optical research, Professor Paul Colditz' Perinatal research into preterm babies plus many other worthy researchers. Current researchers are: Dr Gethin Thomas looking into new therapies for bone and joint disease, Dr Christing Staatz investigating immunosuppressant drug therapies, Dr Kathryn Buller examining brain injury in neonates.

The research over the years has led to medical developments benefiting people all over the world with several being world firsts.

The Foundation is committed to raising funds for medical research to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.

For Lions Club members, consider honouring one of your members with either a Ray Phippard Award or a Professor Ian Frazer Award. Contact the Foundation office for more information and an application form.

Foundation Funding

Funds for the Foundation are derived from donations from the wider community and from Lions Clubs. A major source of funds has come from the annual Lions Miss Personality Quest, now branded as the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest. All Entrants over the Quest's 30 year history have greatly contributed to the good works of the Foundation.

The Quest

The Lions Miss Personality Quest 2008/2009 raised over $282,000.00 for medical research. The Quest now has a new name, the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest, and embraces the good points of the past. It has moved on to a fresher and revamped format bringing it in line with current trends. Any female over 18, irrespective of marital status, interested in raising funds for medical research and having a fun filled year, please contact either a Lions Club for sponsorship or the Lions Medical Research Personality Quest/Foundation office for further information.
